5 DAY SHANGHAI, SUZHOU, TONGLI ITINERARY

Since I’m doing a fair bit of travelling this summer and having to come up with itineraries, instead of deleting them after all the research and time it takes to come up with one, I’ve decided to share them on here. Besides, you never know who may need it! 🙂

Happy exploring and I’ve added tips this time based on my experience. 🙂

 Day 1: Shanghai Museum, Nanjing Road & The Bund

Shanghai museum:

  • Fee: 0RMB
  • Opening hours: 09:00 – 17:00 (last entry 16:00)
  • Time needed: half a day
  • Address: 201 Renmin Road, Shanghai  (人民路201号)
  • Directions:
    • Take bus 46, 71, 112, 123, 145, 916, 925, or Tunnel Line 6
    • Get off at People’s Square Station

Nanjing road (shopping street):

  • Fee: 0RMB
  • Opening hours: 10:00 – 22:00
  • Time needed: up to you
  • Address: Huangpu District, Shanghai City, Nanjing East Road
  • Directions:
    • Stretches from Xizang Middle Road in the west to He’nan Middle Road in the east
    • Lujiazui to Nanjing West Road on subway line 2
    • Essential stretch of Nanjing Road (shopping): between Huanghe Road and Henan Zhong Road

The Bund:

  • Fee: 0RMB
  • Opening hours: all day & night
  • Time needed: 1 – 2h
  • Address: Extends from Jinling Road in the south to the Waibaidu Bridge over Suzhou Creek in the north, on the western bank of the Huangpu River
  • Directions:
    • Take Metro Line 2 or Line 10 to East Nanjing Road Station
  • Huangpu river cruise:
    • To save money:
      • Take a ferry across to Pudong
      • Fee: 2RMB

Day 2: Oriental Pearl TV Tower & Shanghai Tower

Oriental pearl TV tower:

  • Fee:
    • A: 220RMB incl all 3 spheres + Shanghai History Museum
    • B: 180RMB incl 1st & 2nd spheres + Shanghai History Museum *
    • C: 120RMB incl 2nd sphere + Shanghai History Museum
    • D: 35RMB Shanghai History Museum
    • Book ticket in advance
    • Check the weather forecast
  • Opening hours: 08:30 – 21:30
  • Time needed:
  • Address: At the tip of Lujiazui in the Pudong District, opposite the Bund
  • Directions:
    • Take Subway Line 2 and get off at Lujiazui Station

*TIP: get the ticket for 180RMB which gives you access to the glass bridge which is probably the coolest part of visiting the Pearl! For views of the city, Shanghai Tower is the best bet! Also, why not take the ferry across from the Bund! 🙂

Shanghai Tower

Shanghai tower:

  • Fee: 180RMB
  • Opening hours: 09:00 – 21:00
  • Time needed:
  • Address: Financial Trading District, Lujiazui, Pudong
  • Directions:
    • Subway Line 2 to Lujiazui Station; Exit 4

*TIP: try go in the late afternoon so you get to see the city by day and night when the lights go on! They turn them on at 19:00 in the summer.

Day 3 & 4: SHANGHAI – SUZHOU

Numerous trains run from Shanghai to Suzhou. It takes roughly 30 minutes.

*TIP: there are several gardens in Suzhou. There’s no need to go to them all, pick the one that appeals to you! I went to the Humble Administrator’s garden – it was packed with local tourists! The same applies for the water towns.

Humble Administrator’s Garden:

  • Fee: 90RMB
  • Opening hours: 07:30 – 17:30
  • Time needed: 2 – 3h
  • Address: 170 Northeastern Street, Suzhou
  • Directions:
    • Take tourism buses No. 1, 2, 5 to the Humble Administrator’s Garden

Master of the Nets Garden:

  • Fee: 40RMB
  • Opening hours: 07:30 – 17:30
  • Time needed: 1 – 1.5h
  • Address: 11 Kuo Jia Tou Xiang, Dai Cheng Qiao Road, Gusu District
  • Directions:
    • Take tourism bus 55, 202, 529 to Wang Shi Yuan (Master of the Nets Garden) Station

Lingering Garden:

  • Fee: 45RMB
  • Opening hours: 07:30 – 17:00
  • Time needed: 1.5 – 2h
  • Address: 338 Liu Yuan Road, Jin Chang District
  • Directions:
    • Take Tourist Bus No. 1 or 2 or take Bus No. 54, 85, or 406

Tiger hill:

  • Fee: 80RMB
  • Opening hours: 07:30 – 17:30
  • Time needed: 2 – 3h
  • Address: 8 Mennei Street, Huqiu District, Suzhou
  • Directions:
    • Take bus 32, 146, 816, or 949 and get off at Huqiu Station

Day 5: Tongli water town 

  • Fee:
    • 100RMB (including 10 scenic spots)
    • Rowboat: 90RMB (carries 6 people) & ride is  30min
    • Sightseeing Car: 10RMB
  • Opening hours:
    • Town: all day
    • Scenic spots:07:30 – 17:30
    • Retreat and Reflection Garden: 18:30 – 21:30 on the weekends in summertime
  • Time needed: 1 day
  • Address: 30min drive to Suzhou, 1½ hours from Shanghai
  • Directions: public bus to Tongli or metro to Tongli

*TIP: Tongli is magical and unspoiled. You can walk for long stretches in your own company! 🙂
